PaulW... hey there.... i'm looking to replace those mirror caps now... but want to go the route of..
buying the real brushed aluminum caps? if i bought the cap the bottom, and the mirror would that work with the black triangular piece that is on the door frame? also i wanted to do this to change out the right small mirror to larger. Is that circular curve where the chrome meets the plastic probably the same?

You need entire Mirror Assemblies
If you want to change to both large size mirrors, you need the whole assembly, as shown in this RS6 mirror caps/assemblies:

You will probably need to wire them up because I would not be surprised if the connectors weren't the same.....compare schematics here.
Just buying the components shown below won't cut it, the whole mounting assemblies are very different, even though they might not appear to be different.

If you want just the original S8 mirror caps from the 96-98 euro version, they are a direct fit onto your ur-S6 (I take it you have a ur-S6). They are hard to find, but come on up occassion on ebay.de
You want the polish aluminum mirror caps....they are cast aluminum, highly polished. The RS6 and RS4 came with the brushed mirror caps as shown in the first picture.
Here's a few pictures of a 00 and newer S8 mirror cap:

PaulW I need help
I have the pre facelift A8 from 99 and I am stuck with the small right hand side mirror, I am looking to change it. So I was looking from te same year A4 and A6 mirrorn do you think the can fit and do the look the same as the left hand side shape of the A8? and can I only change the plastic of the bigger mirror and put it on my small mirror frame?
