I have just bought a 2001 A8, silver/sabre, 66k miles, 17inch 5 spokes, park assist, premium package, one owner (even has the original window sticker listing at $71k!). The one issue was a CEL was coming on. Pulled the codes and found the secondary air injection faults on both cylinder banks that Paul Waterloo had written the excellent article on. Sure enough, lifting off the plastic engine cover, there was the vacuum line disconnected from the actuator, clear as day!
Driving back to NH from PA, car was seeing 29+ mpg (my C4 A6 was pulling a trailer, so limited to 60-65mph).
Thanks Paul W for the insight on my CEL problem - solved in 5 minutes!

I had the same problem two times, first time I've just conected back, the second time I've realized that the hose is just too short ( poor design ) so make sure that you either pull it a little bit from the other end or just replace it with a new longer one.
