Pioneer Avic z1 or z2
Has anyone done an install of one of these units on their A8? I've been wondering about one of these instead of an RNS-E unit. There are lost of pros and cons to each. I'm a little veclempt ...talk amongst yourselves.

Re: Pioneer Avic z1 or z2
FWIW
I had an Avic S1 and it sukked.
Could not navigate / find the best route. Makes you want to off yourself:/
You may consider a Garmin 360 hand held which works great. ***** about $400USD
And you can bring it along in your rent a car.
Boy if only the iphone had navigation to provide phone, ipod, wifi and navigation all in one.

I've read lukewarm to bad reports on the S1, Swapping discs and whatnot, wheras the Z series wih its bigger touchscreen and built in harddrive is meant to be really good. Wondering if anyone has used one in their 8.

Just googled it, looks pretty cool
Things I would consider against RNS-E:
1. Is the navigation purely off a GPS antenna? If so, when it looses the signal, it won't know where you are. Try driving in Manhattan with something like that, it really sucks. Driven with Hertz "always lost" in Manhattan, a map would of been much, much better.
The RNS-E has an internal compass and speed signal that always knows where it is.....it could has no GPS signal for 4 hours and still pin point your position.
2. How are you going to hook the radio up to the Bose system? Will it work with the screwy line level inputs needed for the Bozo system?
3. Lighting.....does it have a day/night and light input into it? I see it has blue buttons, are you okay with that?
The RNS-E works perfectly and looks stock.
4. It won't give you directions in your instrument cluster.....and actually the top part of your cluster will be blank from now on if you do use it.
Right now, you will still get radio and phone info in your instrument cluster, and once we figure out why the Nav instructions don't work, that will be solved.
5. How much? For my RNS-E (from probably most expensive source), GPS antenna, XM antenna, XM module, bluetooth module and antenna, custom wiring harness that is truly plug and play, I spent $2415 or so.......do you have any idea of what kind of hass it will be to hardwire that whole thing?
Just my $0.02

Does it just pop right in?
Or do you need to do some trimming. Would love to see some pix of how it looks as this is a mod I'm thinking of doing.
No DVD playback for RNS-E killed that idea for me, although I enjoy reading about PaulW's progress!

Im sure the outside edge would require some trimming, actually I hope so, so it would fill out the opening. Pop right in?? Nah, but I'm leaning toward it and maybe a plug and play adapter harness so I can restore the stock system and take the Avic with me if I change cars. I've seen some really good packages online and on craigs list in the $1,000 range. Still, I want to do some more homework on it first. I believe the Z2 also has acceleration "G" information, but have yet to see one in the flesh.

Keep us posted...
if you decide to go through with it.
I am putting an Eclipse AVN5510 in my Tundra truck this weekend, which does not have a dedicated double DIN space.
I may pop out the Symphony II and see how the AVN5510 fits just out of curiosity.
