Default Potential A8 buyer, concerned about MPG, needs favor

I've been a long time Audi owner; several T44s, a C4 and now a C5 Avant. I'm looking for an A8 and there's a rumor going around the A8 doesn't get the best gas mileage.

On that note, my A6 Avant shouldn't be getting as good as it gets either, but that may have something to do with to my own, gas squeezing driving style.

Before I buy an A8, I'm wondering if someone who has a vested interest in getting better mileage themselves would do a little testing for me using my driving suggestions.

The way I suggest driving isn't the usual advice from AAA or the highway saftey institute. I was scheduled to be on NPRs "Talk to the Nation" this week, but got scrubbed because my views are a little controversial. I've written about a 20 page article describing it and would be glad to share it with anyone interested.

Is there someone out there willing to spend some time and effort to check out their A8 using my driving methods for me?

Thanks

Default My daily commute is 6.5miles one way. My average driving speed is 22mph (15-20 stop lights)

I've averaged 13.5mpg with the auto tranny(16.5mpg with manual). HWY mileage with auto tranny was 25mpg with 60mph average. I have a same HWY mpg with the manual.

Default steady-state highway @ 65 is 26mpg no prob. Mix of city and hwy is 15 mpg for me over a full tank.

I know it doesnt answer your question but I thought I'd mention.

I expect that for a V8 engine in a two ton vehicle this is as good as you can sanely expect. If you are very concerned about mileage, then a v8 powered 2 ton vehicle is not what you need.

Default I don't drive to squeeze the gas milage by any means, but I recently measured.....

my gas mileage to and from the airport (about a 100 mile round trip). Average speed was 74 MPH, with the AC on, and I averaged 28.4 MPG. There are some long hills on the way, too. My average MPG for combined city/highway driving is right at 20 MPG. If you were to drive conservatively, you should get better than that.

Default I drive about 400 miles/week

Lots of stop and go, some highway. My 1999 w/162m miles consistantly averages 20 mpg. On trips I drive about 80 mph and get anywhere from 24-26 depending on how aggressive I am when passing the morons who camp out in the left lane! Compared to my wife's Range Rover (16 mpg downhill), the A8's mileage is a dream. I don't really see the logic of buying an expensive German performance car and being concerned about a few mpgs.

I have a 99 A8 which I dearly love. It is a recent purchase, has 139,000 on it and on a recent trip back from northern wi. I got 28.7 on the way home. That's anywhere from 72 to 80 miles per hour. I consistently get at least 25 on the highway. It seems the faster I go the better the mileage is. All this and it isn't even breathing hard. It is a joy to own. I am doing my transmission filter next week and maybe I can sneak a little more out it. I just had new wheels and tires put on. Enkai rims and Yokohama tires.

Default 5th gear in the A8 is really tall.

If the A8 had enough HP to reach the 6200 rpm redline, it'd have a top speed of 204 mph. At 70 mph, the engine's loafing at only 2100 rpm ... hence the great highway mileage.

Default I drive it 70 miles hwy roundtrip for work everyday plus weekend city errands.

I do not drive fast but 5 to 8 mph over usually. When I purchased the car a year ago and drove the speed limits for the first 6 months I averaged 24.7 mpg, now that I have become use to the power and enjoy it too much I average 21.4 mpg.

This past weekend I had a 536 mile vacation round trip - mostly highway but quite a bit of hills and congested highways and averaged 30.8 mpg - when i got home it only took a little over 17 gallons to fill it back up. At one point during the trip when the posted speed limit was only 65 I had the mpg average up to 33, but once I hit the 70 mile an hour zone is when it dropped the average back to 30.8 by the time I made it back home.

Default Post a link to your methods, if you would....

A gas-saving driving style that's too controversial for radio sounds interesting...
