Power steering fluid/filter cleaning.
Few days ago I was asking about filter cleaning fluid change.
So I looked around and Paul was correct, the filter is a in the tank and is easily removed once you get the cap off. It is a plastic cylinder with metal mesh in it. If anything, it should be washed well. Definitely no point replacing it.
Fluid on the other hand is another story. My car has almost 90k and I think the fluid was getting bad. Basically it had this kind of musty machine smell. I always thought it was normal. But guess what: the new fluid has a totally different smell and most importantly color. New fluid is dark emerald color. Old fluid is almost Black/Dark Grey.
It is very easy to drain reservoir and it can be done in 5 minutes. Basically the reservoir is in a bracket and if you pull on it, it will come out. Once I did this, I put an empty oil can under it and drained the tank. I do not know how much entire system takes but tank takes 24 OZ. It is a circulating tank (in and out) so my guess is that this is ½ if not more of the fluid.
What changed: Unless I am mistaken, the power steering wine I had is gone! (it was very mild but never the less)
VW/Audi sells fluid in 12oz cans. Each can is 10$ (you need 2 -so about 20$ covers it)

before I had the time to replace a leaking power steering rack! The fluid is now a nice emerald green. One way to replace all of the fluid is to drain and refill the reservior as you described, and then remove the return hose from the tank and route to a catch can. Start the engine and allow the power steering pump to pump the old fluid out of the system- be sure to keep adding new fluid to the reservoir. Stop the engine when the fluid exiting the return line looks new. Reinstall the return line and top off with new fluid. You now have (almost) all new fluid in your system! I would do this at your 20K mile services.
