this is interesting, especially this part ...
"Test drive the vehicle and make sure the steering wheel returns to center after initiating a turn, if not the adjustment is too tight. Back off the adjustment slightly and road test the vehicle again."
i'll have to do some research on it. thanks for the info.

Following up ... I came across this in my eBahn Bentley A8 repair manual, "Power steering gear, assembly overview" section ...
==============================
Power steering gear, adjusting
Note: Two mechanics are required to perform adjustment. Adjust with engine switched off.
- Raise vehicle on hoist.
- Wheels in straight-ahead position.
- By turning the steering wheel to and fro (about 30 degrees to center axis) a knocking noise will be heard if there is excessive play.
- The second mechanic should carefully turn the adjustment screw (arrow) until the rattling noise can no longer be heard inside the vehicle.
- Carry out a road test.
- Make sure that when maneuvering or negotiating corners the steering self-centers without sticking, re-adjust if necessary.

If the problem really did occur after hitting something, and all the alignment measurements are good, I still wonder about a bent steering rack.
Got enough air in the tires?

the tires have enough air. i wish it was as simple as turning an adjustment screw. we've been looking all around for damaged/suspect components like the rack, servo, control arms, tie rods, sway bar links, etc, but nothing so far. so we're still scratching our heads.

Steering Axis Inclination (SAI). This the one causing the steering wheel to come back by it self after a turn.
Ask your mechanics whether they measured that one.

i meant to say i hope it would be as simple as loosening the adjustment screw. i haven't tried it yet. i'll keep you posted.
