New forum member. I have a 97 A8, been looking to upgrade, and found a 2001 S8 locally with 6k miles(not a typo). It's black on tan, which is my first choice, and has gorgeous aftermarket wheels. Questions: (1) I can get it for 47K...is this a good price? it seems so... (2) it's extremely tight, but there appears to be a slight rattle in the front windows, which I've heard complaints of in on line reviews...rattles aren't as noticeable with radio on but wondering if (a) this is common with all S8's and (b) any way to fix the rattles...(3) any general comments on 2001 S8's would be appreciated as well, since I love this car but want to know what I'm getting into, problem-wise. Thanks for any comments.

1. $47k sounds like a great price
2. No rattles anywhere in my '01 S8 at 38k miles. The only noises I ever hear are squeaking rubber door seals as the frame twists when driving slowly over uneven pavement.
3. The only problem I've had with my S8 has been excessive brake pedal travel. See my solution here.
Check out On Track at audipages; the S8 is a great handling car. After nearly three years, I still look forward to the drive every time I get behind the wheel.

the 00 facelift got rid of quite a bit of problems that occured with older models. As for what your getting in to, well its going be a big step up from your 97, quite a bit quicker and much more fun through the bends.
As for the rattle i had that in my 99 A8 and they never fixed it, just praying it doenst start on my S8 now. Its a great car and 6k is very low indeed.

And if you do find anything 'wrong' with it mechanically, or squeaks - it should still be under factory warranty so Audi should fix it for you...

Ferodo FCP541H -- The "H" is the DS2500 street compound.
Pagid 1158 RS421 -- The RS 4-2-1 is their "Black" street compound.
The S8 rear caliper is the same one used on the S4 and S6. In either case, I'd recommend matching these with the same compound in the front. Sorry I don't have the part numbers for the S8's front Brembo's, but I could give it to you the Alcon TA6 :-)
