Reason why the A8/S8 has/had a timing belt rather than a chain?

weight, simplicity, noise. Timing chains need maintenance too. Either way, belt or chain, you need to R&R it once during a reasonable lifetime. At 105 K mis for the belt, or 140 K mis for the chain idler &c.

A timing belt prevents the transmission of crankshaft harmonic vibration into the valve train, which results in more accurate valve timing.

will not keep their cars until it needs to be changed. I think that as with the lifetime fluids they are marketing a car that does not need maintenance. It makes it more attractive to customers that know little about cars and only want to get in and drive.
