Reason why the A8/S8 has/had a timing belt rather than a chain?

I heard that the owner's manual calls it a "lifetime" chain, but that the Audi service manual recommends a 90k mile replacement. With the timing chain moved to the back of the motor, you have to remove the motor from the car to replace the chain.

..due to the location of the timing belt on the V6 biturbo (and then the V8?), which due to the smaller bay area was in the back of the motor, close to the firewall. Timing belt changes thus required lifting the whole engine.
This rationale doesn't seem to apply to the larger D3 A8, though.
