Removing outside mirrors???

I've checked out the audipages.com article on removing the mirror housings to replace with chrome. One question I have is regarding the trim piece surrounding the glass on my 98's mirrors. The pictures in the article show glass with no trim piece on it. Is there a different procedure for removing the glass on this mirror or does the trim surround need to be removed before attempting removal of the glass? If not, I'll go back out and pry away! Thanks, Bill

Thanks. I'm trying to get them off take pictures of the inside to send to Germany, so they can match them to a chrome set. They have a couple of slightly different units for the same model years and we want to be sure to get the right ones to save the expense and frustration of return shipping overseas. Does anyone know whether or not the trim piece described above needs to come off first?

You can't remove it.....you just need the 175mm left and the 125mm right mirror cap, the pictures shown on audipages.com with the procedure. You don't have to take anything apart, your mirrors are the same as in the article.

This is the article I'm talking about

Thanks Paul.
The guy I'm getting them from seems a bit paranoid about shipping the wrong item. His ebay ad includes all the cars but the A8. Are these the same as the 97 A6? If so, I'll just tell him to send me a 175mm / 125mm pair for an A6.
Here is the email trail I've gone through so far.

Frank,
Thanks for the email. According to Paul Waterloo of Audipages.com these mirrors:
Left hand mirror measures 175mm x 100mm (large mirror)
Right hand mirror measures 125mm x 100mm (small mirror)
will fit all of the following cars:
Model Year
S6 (C4) '95-'95.5
S6 Avant (C4) '95-'95.5
A4 '96-'98
A6 (C4) '95-'97
A6 Avant (C4) '95-'98
A6 (C5) '97-'98
A8 '97-'98
So, the ones in your ad should fit my A8 with no problem.
Thanks,
Bill
