Repair protocol?

Repair protocol?
General question: When a mechanic wants to make a "repair" that he's not sure will fix the problem, is it ok to ask him to take out the new part and put the old one back in if his "fix" didn't work? Or, how much of his "trial and error" should I pay for and how much is on his shoulders?

You pay for the time, unless otherwise agreed upon ahead of time.
After all, it is your responsibility to choose a mechanic you feel is capable of doing the job and maintaining the car up to this point. If it is trouble shooting, that can always be expensive whether it be cars, computers, or anything else. The tech is going to make their best guess, but they can only guess based upong experience and observation - they are human too.
Get an estimate. They will call you if and when they are about to exceed that amount.
