Default Reprogramming '99 Tip Auto Trans using VAG-COM

Has anyone reprogrammed a '99 A8 4.2 Tiptronics ECU using VAG - COM?

My car is VIN WAUBG34D5XN000749; DOP is 7/98

On VAG-COM auto trans screen, component number is
AG501L4.214VUSA1313. Soft Coding value is 00002

I used "search" to look at old Forum threads, but have the following questions:

- Do you use "Recode" within VAG-COM to input a new software version, or select a channel with "Adaption" and proceed from there?

- According to pp 1-24 thru 1-26 of the Bentley A8 CD (under "Auto Trans OBD" section), the USA code is 002, and the ROW (rest of world) code is 001

- Forum archives note changing 002 to 012 or 003 to 013

- Interestingly, another section of the Bentley CD (Tech Bulletins 98-02)covers a service procedure involving transmission valve body replacement to address customer complaints about slow shifting (on cars with VIN before 4D_WN001281)

- Another Bentley CD Tech Bulletin (97-11) shows that trans coding of 001 is ROW with DSP (dynamic shift program) turned on; 002 is USA/Canada with DSP on. Here 011 is referenced as ROW with DSP off; 012 USA/Canada with DSP off. Both latter are noted as "...for maximum fuel economy". Doesn't sound quite what I'm looking for.

- I think DSP is ability of trans to reprogram shift points based upon driving habits.

- Based upon Bentley info, I'd be inclined to try 001 ROW with DSP on, if I knew how to go about it...

Please help.

Default It's easy, you want code 0012

Go to the tranny module on the VAG ross-tech software. Once it connects, you will see numbers appear on the top with software revisions, coding, etc. This is at the top of the screen above the buttons at the bottom.

You'll see that your software code is 0002 (USA/Canada DSP on). You want to get rid of the DSP so it doesn't remeber that you are always light on the gas, therefore it always upshifts early.

Go to the right side at the bottom of the screen, to "recode" (is it 7?). Click on recode, you'll see a new box that comes up with 0002, just change it to 0012 and hit recode. It will remind you to write the code down, then it will do it.

Then you'll be back at the tranny screen and now you will see coding has changed from 0002 to 0012 at the top half of the screen.

That's it! You won't notice any change in mileage, it just uses a different summing function or something of the sort and doesn't let it shift in "old man mode" anymore.

You can always change it back, but you won't want to.
