ride quality

I have noticed the ride quality on my 99 A8 with 40,000 miles has diminished considerably since putting snow tires on with steel wheels for winter. This is the third season with these wheels, I had felt the ride quality was pretty good during the past few winters. But this winter the ride is very bouncy and horrible. There is no cupping on my tires and plenty of life left to the treads.Could it be something other than tires?

I've noticed that outside of a certain 'proper' pressure range, a range that depends on the wheel/tire combo, things can get upset. Too low and the steering is mushy, ride is wallowly and the tires/shocks are out of synch. To high a pressure and the tires are hard enough that the shock has to try to do everything and it gets jiggly and smacks over minor road imperfections. I intentionally check extra high and extra low pressure combinations (always keeping within manufacturer specifications) to see what happens. This helps me select the 'best' pressure and also informs me as to what effect can indicate something might be going off. Also, loading has a big effect. Going on a weekend trip with a full trunk I will usually put a few more pounds pressure in the rears to help balance out the ride.
