So i had my TB replaced a while back and i sadly still had a slightly rough idle. The mech. said it could be a slightly bent connecting rod (as the car was a flood car). I obviously dont have the time/money to attempt to chase that down but i was curious if there was anything else i could look at to fix the rough idle? I have replaced the following:
Motor Mounts (all)
Tranny Mounts (both)
plugs
POS (both)
ran multiple bottles of Techron
Is there anything i can check in VAGCOM (i have the demo version right now!). What category and blocks should i look at? I was also thinking of trying to raise my idle slightly (im currently at 750-760rpm) to around 800 (if i hold the gas down ever so slightly and get it up to around 800 the idle smooths out to damn near perfect. IS this do-able? Also, TOZO, any chance my new TPS (enroute) could fix this? thanks in advance

i could definitely try that. The also seems to sort of ebb and flow, rev wise. at Idle, you can hear the car fluctuating rpm. I watch the rpm on VAGCOM and it will vary from 740-760 back and forth. I have my new TPS enroute from TOZO so that is going on this week but the fuel filter is a good idea...as ive NEVER changed it...AND it was a flood car. Got a pic of where it is? cost?
OH, and NO FAULTS...OBDII or VAGCOM! WOO WOO

I have the same thing and it's about 2 years old. It's black and cruddy. I called Lltek and they have the filters on back order for $77. I'm gonna pull it out, measure it and try to buy it cheaper elsewhere. I'll let you know if I'm successful.
I thought there was a procedure on audipages for the fuel filter but I can't find it. Maybe its buried in an old thread.

Method one, do a compression test. All the cylenders on one side of the motor will have low compression by 25psi
Method two, remove both valve convers. Set the motor to TDC and check the timing marks on cams, they should line up exactly. See photo.

pict of marks not ligned up.

getting misfires left and right and a nasty shudder at 2K rpm. All symptoms are gone...and the rough idle is much improved from what it was. I was thinking of just trying to boost the idle speed up 50 rpm or so to get it to 800ish, thus smoothing it out completely. I thought Tozo said this was do-able to some extent with some screw on the back the throttle body??? is that right? Tonypai - i will also try and dig for the fuel filter replacement...unless paul or Gabor has instructions handy *hint hint* hehehe.

Its take 1 hour with basic hand tools to check. I'd suggest you find a diffrent mechanic who is willing to do so. The best way is method two. I had a 1998 with the exact same symptoms. I bought the car cheap becasue the prevoius owner thought something was wrong with the motor but I knew better. He brought the car back to the mechanic after the timing belt two times and his mechanic stated the belt was on right. I checked and it wasn't.
