I WAS getting exited to see the whole beast; I got a transmission.
BTW, Dude, I'm jealous with those 3 German rods you have. I'll trade you a 96 A6, 97 A8, 99 Accord and a '92 Kaw ZX6.
And what about those S8 mirror covers? Where did you get them? I'm dying for a set or 2.

As far as I know, there is no speed gain in changing to the drink mixer. All you get is trouble, as well as more to do on those everyday trips to work.
What I've heard about drink mixer versus auto:
The drink mixer breaks if not treated carefully (1. and 2. gear are easily ruined with 'inspired' use of accelerator and clutch).
If the driver is not experienced with a drink mixer, the clutch is worn much faster than on a normal car.
Economy (like a S8 owner cares) is not improved much, actually the figures I see lists it as less economical on long distance driving (10.8 liters/100km vs. 10.5 liters/100km) though a careful driver could probably do better through very, very careful driving and using 6. a lot.
Autos last for a long time, and are much more popular second hand (at least in Norway)
The S8 auto is well-programmed for the S8 engine (unlike the A6 2.5TDI auto which seems dumb as a brick) and will be quicker than the drink mixer for overtaking.

I thought I'd start with the mirrors myself. Where'd I git 'em? Pick one:
a) Made 'em out of cocktail shakers
b) Stole 'em off an S8
c) Forged 'em out of Coor's Light cans
d) Bought an S8, kept the mirrors, sold the car
e) Was ordered to purchase them by Paul W
...and theres a good chance a high mileage '02 or '03 S8 could be the bargain of the decade in a year or two IME. How long until $39k is the ??
Then figure out how to add the RS6 pieces.
....and I think I'll hang on to the current group of cars as it will take at least another five years to get them how they should be.
Thanks for the swap offer though

Speaking of arrogance, I love the part about your "old" '99 A6 now driven by your son. Who gets the "old" '99 A8 when you retire it to mothballs for the new Aston; though your dog would love the new spacious Audi SUV when it makes it to market.
Seriously Jim, I don't think many Americans are losing sleep over anything French or German other than the damn auto repair costs.

Only a few hard-core liberals and the punditry of the lamestream media. But it's still fun to poke them with sticks.
And BTW, that new '99 A8 was acquired off-lease very economically, and the chances of me buying a new A-M are pretty slim. About equal to me winning the lottery on the tickets I never buy.
And I'm not losing any sleep on repair costs, either. I'd put myself in the 2nd tier of DIYers on AWA8 - and PaulW is the only guy in the 1st tier ;-)

I'll tip my hat to anyone worthy and/or daring enough to throw a wrench at an A8. I'm affraid to open the hood worried that something (else) might fall off or start squirting fluids at me.
This week the A6 doesn't seem to want to hold on to its coolant and the A8 ABS light has an issue. I promise I already paid my $1200 annual Audi repairs membership fee.
