I run ECS two piece front rotors and rear drilled and slotted rotors with F&R stainless braided lines. Here are my experiences.
PBR Ultimate Ceramics:
Quiet as the OE Pads.
About 1/4 of the dust as OE
Slight improvement is in ital feel and stooping power.
Akebono European Formula
Quest as OE pads
No brake dust at all.
Slight improvement in in ital feel than the PBR ceramics but about the same braking power.

as OEM pads AFAI can tell. They came with a coating on them to help them wear in and squealed until the coating wore off. If I were doing it again, I'd sand down that coating. They also came with a pair of shims for the inside...but I had some extra shims and used them on the outside too. Now that they have worn in, there is no squeal anymore...but I'm disappointed with the amount of brake dust. I don't notice any reduction in dust.
On the box they indicate semi-metallic with ceramic added...so they are pretty much the same as semi-metallic. Car stops great though, I have to say that. Although, when it comes to dust, sometimes it can be the rotor that is making the dust. I bought the least expensive rotors -- Zimmerman for 67.95 pair -- so I can't be sure if the dust is caused by the pads or the rotors or both. I was imagining ceramic to look like a piece of porcelain (not really...but something like it).
On the link there is a pretty good picture. That's exactly what they look like...just grey pads, like any other semi-metallic pad.

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQAudiQQA8_QuattroQQEBCQQBrake_Pad_SetQQ19971999QQ E35DP3836C.html</a
