S8 steering

I drove an S8 for the first time today. It was a 2001. I noticed that the steering felt noticably lighter than the steering on my 1999 A8. I would have thought just the opposite. Did Audi change the ratios on the rack and pinion

Maybe it had servotronic steering? Servo steering is very light at low speeds and tightens up with speed. When I had a loaner that didn't have it, I couldn't believe how hard parking became.

I can certainly confirm that my 2001 S8 has by European standards very light steering at low speeds but plenty of feedback when driving faster. I guess that indicates that it has servotronic but I don't know how to check for it.

See the audipages <a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/susp_whls_brake_steer/srack.html">steering rack writeup</a> on where to find it. . . .

Hold one finger up to any passing BM driver ;-))
If you can turn the steering wheel with one finger whilst the car is standing still (although your finger might feel bent back a *little* bit), you've got servotronic. The car I had as a loaner which didn't have it was a two-armed grapple to pull off that sort of trick...

..i'm used to it and actually feels good. At medium speeds and above it gets heavier and at higher speeds it's more "rigid".
It's getting used to, though..
