Default S8 tire sizes

It's time for new rear tires and was wondering if I should go to a wider rear tire size, or stick with the 245/45 18 all around? I'm running the stock 18 inch S8 rims

Default I've wondered the same thing

Might be worth posting in the AW Tirerack forum. Gary w/Tirerack might be able to tell how wide you can go...Of course if someone out there has done it already I'd love to hear their experience.

Post some pics of your beast!

Default If its anything like an S4....i wouldnt play with different widthes....

Keep in mind you need to rotate these puppies. (unless you have the money to burn for a new set every time the fronts get low) Unless you swap all 4, your gonna have different rolling diameter in the front and rear (somewhat worn tires versus fresh tires) This is not good for the quattro system. (so says the owners book)

If your thinking how can a 911 turbo, or c4 get away with it, its because the system is already setup to have different tire widths and aspect ratio's. P-car awd system is also a bit different. It tries to run as a more rear biased car, and dialing up the front wheels as needed. Audi's try to run a 50/50 split, its more awd-centric. (for some reason I recall the earliest p-car C4's had a diff lock for the center diff)

I would stick to same width and aspect ratio all around, it will make it easier to deal with, and give less reason for your stealer to complain if you take it in for service. You dont have to worry about screwing the awd system up or wearing it out early etc. If its a lease then do what you want but if you plan to keep it, i would advise against it.

Default If you go wider, go wider on all 4.......

Might have to reduce the aspect ratio, but then get ready to loose rims to pot holes. ($650/rim for an S8 rim) If you widen and leave the aspect ratio, make sure you have vag handy or have the stealer recalibrate the cluster to accomidate for the different tires size. (your speedo will most likely off by a few mph)

Wider rear tire = more understeer, not what you want.

Default Yes, the car is heavier in front, so why not wider front tires?

It's been done before, by a carmaker then owned by Michelin. Rationalité.

It would be interesting to try that.
