Default "not an issue on U.S. streets" LOL!! No officer, IV'E never gone that fast on the street ;-)

"Once both cars are in 4th above 109 mph (not an issue on U.S. streets), the gap will get pretty big."

Default Impressive write-up. I agree that there are a lot of dings etc. for a car with only 19K miles.

I would definitely have the car looked at by a reputable independent mechanic to see if there has been any significant body work done.

Default I had similiar experiences with a 01

I test drove one last fall for a guy in Toledo who was considering it....suspension didn't match my H&R's one bit, the brakes were very soft (but the car had been sitting on the lot), but I did like the 7200 RPM redline. The steering was also very, very light.

With the shorter gears, it didn't seem to take advantage of it as much, that might not sound right, but that's what I felt.

My brakes and steering on my 97 are very firm and relatively heavy compared to newer A8's that I have driven.....feels way better.

Default The wife's comment while waiting for me at the dealership

"What? $45k for 2001? Why "S"? Why you men are so crazy about horsepower? How can you drive 130mph on any freeway @ anytime of day these days? Give me the $45k and I'll buy this brand new A6 right now."

Hahahahaha.

Darn, she wanted to trade in her station wagon now.

Default Seems awfully high for an 01

A S8 with 17K miles in okay shape is less desirable to me than one with 55K miles in perfect shape.

And considering you can get an 01 for less than 30K these days, whoever buys it at that price is going to take a beating.

Heck, you can't get 20K for a 97, 98 or 99 anymore.

I drove a S8 for Paldi once...it definitely is faster than the A8. The gears are much shorter.

Default typical of Carlsen

not a big surprise that there are so many dings and flaws on this S8. they keep a lot of crappy inventory at Carlsen. the first A8 i looked at there had huge, hideous scars on both bumpers and nearby body -- prolly $2-4k of replacement and finishing -- and they wouldn't knock the price down. i ended up going to stevens crook instead.
