Default Hey Faris, what kind of trouble you trying to stir up ? ;-)

You've posted on other forums with a similar question.

The S8 competes against an M7 - if BMW made one.

Audi does not have a competitor for the M5. Look to the S6 Avant as being the closest Audi comparison you will find if you are in N.A.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, S8 or S6 compares to M5

Also, I just read something about the A8 6.0 W12!! how does that compare to 750iL (or even S600)?

Default We are supposed to get the W12 with the next gen A8, coming to Europe in '03.

We often get the cars in N.A. 6 to 12 months after Europe.

Default Why S6 Avant to compete with M5?

Why to put an station wagon to compete with a sedan? There is an S6 sedan, even thogh I have not seen any on the steers.

True, we will only get the wagon for now. Overall size and specs more closely match.

Default Probably V10 for North America

Word from folks I've spoken to at Audi say North America is more likely to see the V10 that's going into the new Lambo in the next S8. With BMW, Corvette, etc. pushing everything to 400 HP for the US market, they need a more muscular engine than the W12. The W12 actually doesn't produce the low end torque or tuning possibilities the number of cylinders suggests. The engine was done by VW and is designed to cruise at high speed with fuel efficiency, not accelerate. With most states still at speed limits of 55 to 70, such an engine would disappoint us Americans.

Default Thought you guys hated diesel? :-)

That sounds pretty odd, the W12 producing more torque at idle than the 2,7 biturbo V6 does at max. The W12 is the most powerful production 12 sylinder in the industry, beating BMW, Benz and Jaguar with healthy margins.

Do you have any more information regarding the V10? All I have seen is that the V10 is a TDi (Diesel!) engine, producing 313 HP and a torque that would leave a Peterbilt truck in the dust. Yes, it will be available in the A8, and it will be a fantastic powerplant, but do you think they will put it in the S8 for the american market? I don't. So I guess you mean a V10 petrol engine, which surely sounds very interressting! That will probably mean no V8 turbo, but most information that leaks out says that such V8 engine will be available. So there is something in this picture that does not quite match up IMHO.

One thing is certain, 300 HP V8 will not be what it used to be, and I will probably have a TDi sooner or later. :-)

Got the oppurtunity to test drive the new Bora (Jetta in the US) TDi (150 HP) at a track recently. Loaded car with a fantastic engine. Truly amazing power, it wasn't much slower around the track than my car! And it is easy to chip upgrade to 180-190 HP. These new diesel burners are very, very strong, and great fun to drive!

Default Re: S8 vs. M5

Lets play this on a totally even field then.....give me a euro S8 with a six speed transmission instead of the 5 speed tiptronic, and can I PLEASE have the V-12 6.0L engine available in Europe?? (420 Hp if I'm not mistaken) Really, I don't know why Audi doesn't bring the 6 speed over here to let us play with the fun stuff.......I know they consider the A8 and the A8L a touring sedan, but why not give the option to us speed freaks!!!!! With the 6 speed and bigger engine, the S8 will at the least run with the M5 in terms of performance, and the extra size and luxury make it a total winner......perhaps BMW will have to come out with the M7 sometime to compete??
