hi all I am a new member, I have a 1997 s8d2, first registered in Italy, hence it is the 6 speed manual, lhd,
there is a problem with the clutch, I am trying to find out if it is the clutch plate or the master/slave cylinder
when I depress the pedal I can not select any gears, if I select a gear then start the car will leap forward, there was a "clunk" when it stopped working!!
any help, or a point in the right direction will be much appreciated.
many thanks rob

sounds like the clutch is not disengaging when you depress the clutch pedal. first thing to check is your clutch fluid level, should be a small reservoir on top of the clutch master cylinder. if its empty/low the clutch will not engage/disengage properly. top the fluid off (see manual for correct fluid). check the clutch master cylinder/hoses/slave cylinder for fluid leaks and repair as needed.
another possibility is a bad throw-out bearing. on a different vehicle I had one fail and could not shift using the clutch pedal or engage into gear when at a stop.
check for the fluid/leaks and inspect the other components and let us know what you find.

I'm guessing the clutch MC gets fluid from the brake fluid reservoir. That's the way it is in earlier manual transmission Audis.
My 6MT Allroad quit going into gear last year. Turned out to be a bad pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft. It didn't let the input shaft to the transmission stop turning. So now it has a new clutch, throwout bearing AND PILOT BEARING.
