Should a '00 A8 timing belt be loose like this? (see pic inside)

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/141426/dsc_0851.jpg"></center><p>I could not believe this timing belt could be so loose and stay on. There is at least an inch of movement in the belt both ways. Is there a tensioner that springs into action when the engine starts?

Are you at TDC there? The belt is most evenly tensioned at TDC. Off of TDC it can get very slack on that side of the engine. When I did my timing belt job, I was scared that I had screwed something up badly, but Bob in CT told me to turn it to TDC by hand to see how the tension was in that position and sure enough, it was perfect. Just a thought.
