size of A8??
I'm a long term Audi owner and toying with the idea of an A8. My current cars are 99 A6 Quattro and an 86 (never die) 5000s.
The 5000 is ready to retire and I was looking for a older nice 100 or V8 of the same vintage, but nice ones are scarce. So now I am thinking a later model 97 or 98 A8 might work.
My basic question is the physical size of the A8. How does it compare with my A6 particularly the interior driver and passenger room?
What other important major maintence should I be concerned about other than timing belt and transmission flush? Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

i have both A6 and A8 (both are 1999)
The A8 is definitely larger. As a matter of fact, I just noticed that the A8 is about one inch longer than my 2001 Toyota Landcruiser. The A8 is roomy inside, larger trunk than the A6 and more legroom all around. I am not a big guy so the A8 is larger than what I need so I usually drive that on longer trips. Around town, I actually prefer the A6 because it is a bit more responsive, steering a bit tighter. Although the A8 does not drive like a big car. It actually feels like I'm driving an E-class MBZ or 5-series BMW when the A8 actually has similar dimensions to the S-class and 7-series.
So to cut a long story short, A6 is fine for local driving by yourself and significant others, but not as comfy as an A8 would be if you have a family of 4.

Here is all the info you are looking for.......
I would stay away from the 97's, get a 98/99 and look for one with a new or rebuilt tranny.<ul><li><a href="https://www.audiworld.com/model/a8/98/a8.shtml">Model guide</a></li></ul>

I respectfully submit that the A6 is a chick car (ducks to preserve cranium).
The A8 says with quiet but unmistakeable authority, "I will crush you if you cross me, little man." The A6 lisps, "Cocktails, anyone? Mickey's making Mai Tais on the lanai!"

On a more serious note, my 8 has never felt like a large car to me. It's built tight, and it feels snug and safe (and is -- read the crash-worthiness reports). Sort of like a nice solid Austrian wingtip, instead of a wobbly pink cocktail stiletto with a little ball of ostrich frou-frou on top of it. (Not that there's anything wrong with that).
