Default I have some questions about what it takes to rebuild an auto trans. I've been *this* far into a ZF

a ZF5HP19FA when I had to swap a trans and an ATF pump in a repo'd 1999 A4q I bought. I took the old trasmission a little further apart to check things out.

I was on the verge of trying to rebuild that one that had a burnt E clutch, but opted for a good used one, instead. I read the relevant sections in Bentley and had a few lingering questions that made me go the easier (but more expensive) route.

I've seen that the parts list for the rebuild kits include shims of various thicknesses. How often do you need to use a shim other than the one that actually came out of the trans? Is there anything tricky to taking the measurement to select the shim?

How deep would you go into an A8 trans? Do you go all the way down to the F***in F Seal?

What's the most potentially frustrating part of the process?

I'm on the verge of getting this beast and trying to fix it. The rest of the car is a dream....other than it seems to be running a little rich as evidenced by the black soot in the tail pipe.

Default There are a few members on this forum who rebuilt their own tranny.

Just take your time and you can do it. If you need parts I can get it for you or you can try some of the suppliers. I don't know how many of them sells hard parts. You will have to disassemble the tranny completely for the clutch F. The bolts are accessible from the back so the center diff has to come out too. You will have to re shim all the clutches because they will have different thickness. I've emailed you with the part list.

Default Re: There is no way to prevent limp mode.

I also Purchased a 97 A8 with a Messed up trans for $1,000 Still need to buy the tranny from Tozo, But I would rather get tozo to put in a 6MT!
