So instead of a six speed, how about a $100 tiptronic mod for '97 owners?

Walter-
Thanks. Like everything, I always get too excited and start writing things down before I finish them?
I looked the wiring diagram for the steering wheel and it appears I can't use the switches due to the fact that the "stereo brain" is in the steering wheel. The switches on the wheel input into the brain which converts the signal and sends it to the radio over (1) conductor. So the switches don't jump the steering wheel movable contacts or clock springs, just one does.
So I'm thinking of at least taking the console apart, finding the connector and jumping the connections. If it shifts into tip, great, I'll figure something out including just buying a tip switch and mounting plate if that is possible.
It's getting more expesive....okay, I'll go with the six speed! ;-)

Electrically, it is the same as the 6 speed in the S4. I know because I really hoped to avoid having to create a neutral detecting switch to enable the Aladdin 2000 alarm (that I have installed on a few A4 and S4) to provide a user friendly remote start. Unfortunately there is nothing but a reverse switch and speedo sender.

I doubt it would, but does it have the transmission control unit?
It appears that I will need an engine ECU for a six speed manual if I do the conversion.
