Default So, replacing the MAF should cost . . .

Hada 'nother "check engine" light come on Monday and the shop diagoses long-term fuel trim too lean and too lean at cruise speed (65-75mph). They want to replace the dirty MAF and the air filter, for which he quotes $310. installed.

This sound right to you ?

Default get a refurb s4 maf and install one. do a serach on google for audi parts.

or I have a used a8 one from my car. I replaced it because I thought it was a problem. If you would like it please contact me. the replacement is easy and you can do it yourself if you have even limited mech ability. I don't remember the cost of the remaf MAF for a s4 (it is the same as ours just have to take it out of the intake it is in and repalce it in the a8 intake) but it is alot cheaper.

Yeah, thanks Marc - that quote is using a remanufactured part. He says that the S4 part would cost only $3 less than the A8 piece. Normally, I really like & trust this service shop so I'd like to know if this is right.

Default Do a search on this forum we talked about it as a possible

hunting issue for the tranny problem on the 97-99 models. but it did not fix the hunt issue. I don't remember the cost off hand, I have the bill at home but it was lots less then a new one and If I remember correctly nowhere near $300.. plus the air filter you can get a k&n for around $50. for that job is step. not a hard job to do by any means about 15 mins

Default Save some money: at least do the air filter yourself: it's reeeeally easy. How much does a dealer...

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31455/escapa8_grattan2003_ryoung_clean_engine_bay.jpg"></center><p>...charge per hour labor?

Above is ryoung's engine bay: the air filter is in the square box on the left (the one that has the big hose/pipe connected to it). You only need a screwdriver I believe to losen up the hoses (so they can turn around their connection points) and open up the air filter housing. A vacuum cleaner may come in handy because the housing itself may have quite some dirt in it.

Default fyi: there was a maf warranty extension from audi couple of years ago ...

i don't recall the details, but i had my maf replaced under warranty last year at the dealer due to fuel trim too lean. search the forums for it or inquire at dealer.

Default BTW: Engine bay pic

Inlet to the filter box seems to be made of single pipe?
Before, (ABZ at least) it was made of two pipes. 1) is it possible to exchange those two into this newer one, without changing the box itself? - old version has some kind of insert at the box entrance, with two separate nozzles - would there be same size of insert - interchangeable - but corresponding to single inlet pipe?
2) why they changed from two to one? Is this new solution better for some reason?
Frankly, I'v never liked those two, with their relatively small size.
