Default Some info on this S8

Saw this on ebay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2464926605&cat egory=6005

...but a few things don't check out. The interior doesn't seem to jive with what I know about the S. The seats look like regular leather, not Valcona. The stitching patter seems to match my '97 A8. They don't look like sport seats with the extended thigh support and distinctive side bolsters. There are no aluminum door sills with the "S8" logo. I was thinking the instruments were electrolumenescent. These don't look it. And the wood is too tan to be the gray bird's eye maple. The CarFax report says S8, but I'm confused. Any S8 owners to set me straight?

Default How do you read the VIN?

Default Looks alright ...

Though the comfort seats aren't listed as an option in my '01 Audi A8/A8L/S8 brochure, as Paul said, this isn't the first time we've seen them in an S8.

The first pic shows the aluminum sill, but I can't really tell if there's an S8 logo. It's only an etching in the aluminum and would be hard to see. The pic thru the open driver's side door is no help, the aluminum sill is cropped off the bottom.

The birdseye maple looks a little off, but in may just be the color balance of the pics.

Does the S8 have a backlit electroluminescent instrument cluster? ... jeez, I don't even know; but the pics look like mine. The write-up does contain at least one other error, "Body Material: Fully galvanized (both sides) steel".

Thanks for the input. It sets my mind at ease.

Any other thoughts on this car, I think I will probably bid? Are later cars better?

Yeah, I think there was a luxury seats no charge option vs. the standard sports seat package. Also, you may already know but this car already went through ebay once but didn't meet the reserve with a high bid of $36,659. I think their buy it now price is a bit high, I didn't pay much more for an '03 S8 recently. BUT, these are rare and if it's the one you want you've got to jump. I missed out on a couple of them by literally a matter of hours trying to bargain.

Default '01 thru '03 S8's are essentially identical (more) ...

Since the warranty has only 500 miles left, somehow you need to confirm that everything's perfect. The only problems worth mentioning that I've had with my S8 in 40k miles were a leaking transmission output seal, a loose rear sway bar link bolt causing a thunk, and a power steering fluid leak (the last to be fixed later this week). Well ... one other thing, a long Brake Saga. You probably should have the tranny fluid and filter changed at the first opportunity.

I don't abuse my car, but I do track it regularly. Mechanically it's been near perfect, and performance is borderline unbelievable for a 4-door sedan. Since the ebay car looks like it's on it's 2nd set of Dunlop SP8000's (OE, but not a great tire), I expect the owner rarely drove the car hard; a performance orientated driver would surely have installed better tires.

Good Luck !!

Used A8/S8 buyer's Guide

I'd be very cautious bying a non-Certified (it's not, right?) car like that...
