Squealing front brakes only for 2-3 secs when setting off (reverse)...
It's a '01 S8. Not sure which pads are there, perhaps the original ones. 33k miles. Recently replaced the rear pads, so this is from the front brakes. When I start in the morning and back out of the garage (or anytime in reverse motion upon startup--eg, coming out of parking at Starbucks) and press on the brakes, they're squealing loudly. That's for 2-3 secs as they need a lot of pedal pressure to grab. After that, they're fine, and they grab strong during driving.
Is this indicative of brake-fluid pressure? Ideas?

Mine are the same...only thing I hate about the car..Many have written about the S8 brake squeel
I have to push pretty firm right after start when backing down as well...The stealer tells me it's a pressure system and takes a second to pressurize, however the do work but its a bit of an uncomfortable feeling right at that moment. They work great otherwise. May try some other pads when out of warranty to try and avoid the squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel. Mine are currently OEM, with plenty of pad left.

No squealing on my S8
There was a bit of 'graunching' when you lift your foot of the brake, when crawling in heavy traffic. But that seems to have gone with new brakes & discs (OEM under warranty - for other reasons tho).
But as you replaced the rear pads, aren't the fronts up for replacement also?

You won't believe it, but the rear were replaced since they were the wrong size and were "clicking"!
I do have the 'graunching' noise when crawling in traffic. Hope it will go away with new pads soon.

Mine do that too...My understanding is that the rotors
are so big, they just tend to 'sing' (harmonically vibrate -- like a tuning fork) a little bit when cold. Nothing to really worry about.

Yep, mine is exactly like yours...
I have an 02 and get the exact same behavior. I had the dealer change our front and rear pads and it quit doing it for a couple thousand miles. But now its back again.
Let us know if you find a more permanent 'fix'. Seems like it happens to a lot of us.
