My 2001 A8L, about 5 times in about that number of years of ownership, has had all electrical functions in the steering wheel cease to function. The tiptronic and radio switches don't work, and there is no steering wheel heat. Between anywhere from a few days to a few weeks later, it cures itself and works perfectly again for quite some time. A few days ago it stopped again, and being the middle of January, I WANT MY STEERING WHEEL HEAT BACK NOW!
Any ideas on what can cause failure of all steering wheel electrical and what I should look for? I don't feel like waiting for it to decide it should work again on its own because it is *cold* out there.

It's probably a bad connection going to the self cancelling ring. It's the data wire.
If you have vag-com, go to the steering wheel control module and pull the codes. It will tell you if there is an open circuit or not. Then you have to find it.
The reason I know is because the same thing happened to me when I was doing the retrofit of a MFSW to my S8.

perhaps Tozo, I wonder if it was successful? I believe the heating element was no longer functioning, like not your problem though.
