steering wheel noise

2001 S8......moving the wheel at slow speed sounds like an old lady groaning. It sound like it is right at the steering wheel. Moving the wheel in and out does not change it. Happened a while ago and stopped....its back. Sort of like a tooth ache.

I think it's the control arms or maybe a tie rod. Probably just buy the control arm kit from ecstuning for $630 and replace all of them.

You haven't changed wheels (to larger diameter), right--rubbing? If it were the pump, the groan would be heard only at full lock. Have you noticed any fluids leaking on the ground while stopped (another sign of a steering rack problem).
So, if this is happening only while in motion, and driving at slow speeds, most likely it's related to the control arms. Do you get the groan in one direction only or both directions?
Did you hit any curb recently or other axel contact/damage?
