Default Steering wheel noise - did anyone find a fix yet?

My 98 A8Q has been developing a loud (inside and out) groaning noise when turning wheel. At worst when slow, parking and turning. Feels as if needs lube somewhere as very slight shimmy thru steering wheel. This seems to be getting worse. Fluid is OK.

Searched and saw quite a few threads - any ideas before I have to go and see a dealer?

PS - where is the power steering pump? Is this the culprit do you think?

Check tire pressure and belt tightness. You already checked the fluid so there is only one more thing to check. DA PUMP!

Default Likely the pump, could just need the fluid flushed however.

The pump is bolted to the front driver's side of the engine. A replacement will set you back around $450 plus labor and fluid. I would have a knowledgable mechanic completely flush the system first to see if that fixes the problem. Good luck! BTW- how many miles on your '98?

Interesting - it may just be the tie rod ends - it's going in next week to have them replaced as the steering is wandering a lot in the dead ahead position. I wonder if that puts pressure on the power steering pump? I might also have them flush the ps fluid while they're at it. Thanks.

Did they change the pump or just the tie rod ends?

Default Here's the pump

I agree with skiracer, have the fluid flushed first. This is another lifetime fluid that needs to be flushed on occassion.

I recoded somebody's transmission a few weeks ago, his 97 made squealing noise like the hydrualic (steering) system was low on fluid, but the level was just fine.

I would flush it first and let the new juice run through. It might need a follow up flush in another six months to get most of the bad stuff out.

Only use audi fluid, unless you can find the OEM subsititue and you know what you are doing!

Default Isn't this a lifetime fluid?

Just kidding. Audi probably says it is, but of course, it's not.
