Strange Electronic Problem with Cupholder Human/Machine Interface
Here's an overview.
I have a 2003 S8 with the NAV system (not the NAV system with the display in the radio - the version of NAV that has the information displayed in the little screen between the tach and the speedometer).
This system is controlled by a few buttons and a dial in the center console - in the area where the front cupholder is located in A/S8's without the NAV system.
In normal operation, you spin the dial to select different options (or letters if you are spelling out the name of a town/city/street etc) on the NAV display, and press the dial to select the highlighted option/letter.
My dial seems to have a mind of it's own, because it selects options/letters on it's own without the dial being pressed.
The only additional piece of info I have been able to collect is that the dial never selects something without me having spun the dial - most times it selects whatever option/letter is highlighted after three clicks of the dial left/right. If I don't spin the dial at all, it seems to be content where it is at and does not select anything on it's own.
This interface also controls an in-dash menu which is used to enable/disable the tire pressure monitoring system and other miscellaneous features - this behaves in much the same way, so the problem is not unique to the NAV system but instead unique to the interface in the cupholder.
I hooked up my VAG-COM, ran an auto-scan, and did not detect any error codes.
Any ideas?

I tried to remove the switch box - no luck
Is there a trick of some kind, or do I just need to pull harder, perhaps with the assistance of a screwdriver at the bottom of the box to help pry it upwards?

similiar problem but mine skips menu items, which seems odd in that it's NOT random
For example I can't change the clock because the dial skips over the menu option. It moves and then when it gets to a particular option it does nothing for that one click, then the next click moves on to the next option, skipping the one. Any ideas?

Sounds like a job for nylon trim sticks.
One of the best additions to my toolbox ever.<ul><li><a href="http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/dealers/specialtytools.html">5th item down. Get two.</a></li></ul>
