Default Strange New Ticking Sound

No it's not a bomb:->

There is a strange ticking sound coming from the engine. Sounds like it could be a lifter, but I'm not sure. Any ideas???

Default Since we're DOHC, we don't have lifters in the traditional sense, do we?

It could be excess valve clatter from a valve that's loose or something? Is it pronounced? In-synch with engine revs? Comes from a distinct side of the motor?

Default Yes it's in-synch with engine RPMs

It sounds like it's coming from the right side of the engine.

Default Re: I've identified a ticking coming from my Tourque

Converter-- Nopt going to do a thing about it till it fails, since it entails yanking the tranny, etc.

Default First thing: check your oil level. Similar noise came from PaulW's engine after race driver Probst..

...through his car around the track of Mid-Ohio for 3 laps.

I had the same noise after doing an oil change, underfilling the engine by 1.5 quarts.

Valve or lifter noise is at 1/2 engine RPM, of course, and you can usually localize it pretty well by putting a long screwdriver or wooden dowel to you ear and pressing to various parts of the valve covers. Good technique for bearings like alternator too. Keep it out of belts.

Oil Level is good...I'll try to localize it.

Default Re: Strange New Ticking Sound

I had what sounded like a light ticking sound from a lifter. I ignored it and a week later a spark plug blew out. It had obviously been insufficiently tightened when installed (by main dealer at great cost!) and had worked loose.
