Also check to see if your steering wheel is tight against the steering lock. What I mean is try turning the whlle slightly to the left or the right with a firm steady force to see if that relieves the pressure on the steering lock engagement. Many a key in many a car gets "stuck" for this reason.

I shifted from the "tip gate" into park in one fell swoop. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but the shifter seemed to be between gates if that makes sense. It was difficult to get the shifter back out of Park, but didn't require brute force. Once I backed it out, then took the more deliberate path, all was well. However, the key was stuck in the ignition until I did so.
This was in a '99 2.8 Avant FWIW. Never had a problem after that.
