Sub-woofer install finally completed and the difference in sound quality is amazing...
#21
just added a 10 to my set up and tuned it...heres what i went with
front speakers at 60 hz for some extra mid bass rears at80 and sub at 40...gain on amp low, over 100 hz tuned up a bit..sounds amazing..i used to always put new mids in highs in my vehicles but these bose speakers that are in there stock sound amazing when tuned right..no need for any replacement just needed some low end..very ahppy so far, will post pics soon.
1 suggestion to a lot of members and you....your sub should be firing towards the rear for best sound quality..firing up as many have results in a distored sound wave....your only getting half of it...im assuming your main concern is putting gear in the trunk but a grill for you sub can solve that....just my suggestion it will help your sound quality to point it firing toward the back..thats how they are designed..
feel free to ask for details---i worked at an audio shop for a bit...will post pics of my set up this weekend
keep up the good work,

For clarification's sake: the improvement doesn't JUST add bass, it allows...
...the dynamic range of the other speakers in the system to be reduced to, and focused on, mids and highs. As a general principle, when you ask for too much range out of a speaker, it underperforms in all ranges.

By "the improvement" I think that you are referring to the addition of (another) subwoofer. I'm sure that you are right. Whether it just adds bass, which wouldn't be bad thing, as opposed to extending the range of the system, will depend on whether the frequency range of the added sub merely overlaps with the frequencies already produced by the existing system. But, of course, all that really matters is that you like it.

Ano ne, boku wa mo gakusei desu! (Just for the record, I too am a student!)
IMO - I learned this from Paul - better bass means tight, deep, but most importantly, controlled bass. (Note that I am not commenting here on anything that anyone has done. This is strictly a theoretical exercise). Controlling a big bass driver means an amplifier with big capicitors (in microfarads, I believe) and consequently lots of current running through it (note that this is not the same as watts). If I was going to upgrade the system in the A8 I would be tempted to try to by-pass the amplifier stage in the Concert and use only the pre-amp/tuner section, then I would send the signal to a proper amp, and upgrade the source, i.e., the CD player. (I don't have a phatbox). Finally, I would be tempted to build a proper cabinet for the existing drivers in the rear deck. None of this would be easy. I doubt that some of it is even possible. So, don't listen to me, I'm some kind of idealist. (I took full-year course on musical acoustics as an undergraduate, and have been around high-end audio equipment for eons, but my knowledge of electronics is woefully inadequate. I also lived in Japan for a year - LOL.)BTW - I'm quite certain that you have improved your bass extension and response!
