Most of the D3's on this board have reported an optimistic indicated speed

Hi my speedo is off about 5mph at speeds of 60 to 80 mph. The car is actually going slower than the speedo says. I just learned to live with it. 2004 A8L serial 8170 My dealer said no MMI update available for my serial number.

Default What is LX recall?

What is the LX recall? For D3 or earlier?

Default It's a level sensor recall for the early D3's. (Some Info)

Even though I got the notice, I didn't get the sensor replaced, as it was a newer version than the version being recalled. My service advisor explained that there were three versions of the sensor: a 'launch batch', a second updated set, then the latest/current. These are being used to replace the launch version sensors. So since my sensor wasn't the version being recalled, it was left in.

It was nice to get an A6 3.0 as a loaner, a great step up from the Enterprise Jettas.

FWIW I have experienced the same 3-5 mph "optimistic" speedo error om BMW motorcycles.

Plano, we exchanged posts some time ago about my '04 A8 7178 leaning roughly 15-20 mm to the right. I was told that this VIN doesn't need a level sensor replacement. I got a lot of cute nifnaf about my garage floor, etc.from some of the "loquacious" denizens of this forum, but you were the ONLY person who actually measured/reported lean or its lack, and your lean was similar to mine but to the left IIRC. You must also be an engineer, no? Anyhow I would be most grateful to learn whether the sensor replacement affects the list of your A8. TIA

Default Z, mine wasn't replaced ...

and I haven't remeasured my car to see if they did anything, I was told it would be 'more level'. I remember our exchange, and I'd measured my car before taking it in. I'll measure it again tonight to see if there was a change.

And yes, I'm a mechanical engineer who does software. It's good to hear from you Z, how's your car doing?

Hmmm, did they call your car in for the LX recall and then decide not to do it? Other than the list to port (which may be more annoyance than defect) the car is doing fine for the first 3k miles at least. We plan a 1000 mile trip soon and it should be great on a longer drive. I look forward to your data. I am a very rusty retired Chemical Engineer but I DO like things on the level<VBG>

Default Correct, recalled but not replaced...

I guess they don't keep a list of the serial numbers of all the parts installed in the car, that seems like an oops to me. Until your post way back when, I wouldn't have noticed the list my measurements indicate. Oh well, I'll see if anything has changed since I took the car in.

Glad to hear that your car's doing great! 3K miles already, you'll pass me fairly soon :-)

In Sweden, where I live, there is a law stating that a speedometer must never show less speed than the actual speed, providing the car has the right wheel dimensions. There is also a rule saying that a change of wheel dimensions must never cause more than a 5% change in circumference compared to the original wheel dimension recommended by the manufacturer.
The end result is that all cars in this country have speedometers that show between 5 and 10% higher speed than the actual speed. And I believe this is true for Most other countries i Eurepe as well.
