It usually reads about 12 volts when the car is not running.

Default Then what do you suggest I trouble shoot? Check the grounding of the negative cable for the battery?

Might it be the alternator? If I did procure one of those Communications devices, might it tell me wht the precise problem is? If not, then might I needd to replace a plug or two (all?). I am done dealing with the A6 for today. The CEL didnt come on to and from work and she was driving like a dream on this most fine summers day.

Taking apart the A8, I was able to fix the seats and seatbelt situation in two seconds flat. Thanks to the Jims! However, whilst working in there, I noticed a gas smell. I looked under the car and saw some drippings aound the tank. I recalled a problem like this arising before with our friend Barryl. Here is the link. http://members.rennlist.com/drive944/fuel_leak_repair.html
I found the very same think. A pool of gas in the indention. The tank was just filled last night. Barry said he thought the new seal he purchased for 15 dollars may not have fixed it. I took a few pics of our A8 and will post them under my fathers account. Hopefully we can get an update from Barry or others who may have run into this problem!

Default Barry's fix did solve the problem.

He didn't think it did, but after a week, it did.

As far as your alternator, I doubt it is bad either, and your starter is most likely good too.

Problems with the electrical system are almost always in a connection. Batteries do go bad, but normally after long periods of operation.

Because you had a check engine light, your computer probably still has a fault code stored. Some codes automatically clear after a sucsession of starts (maybe 25?) with no problems, but I doubt yours has.

The first step in troubleshooting the problem is to pull the codes. Then you will need the Bently to determine what the code means, or post to the A6 forum for somebody to post.

Other than that, I cannot offer more information, the problem sounds to be intermetient for now, but they usually don't stay that way forever.

Default BTW, bring the A8 into the dealer for the fix

You might want to print the procedure out so they can do it right! ;-)

It's an Audi assured car, correct?

Default If you pull the codes, you can post to A6 if you wish,

but I'll generally see it quicker if you post it here.

I've got A6 and A8 Bentley manuals on this laptop.
