Default Thermostat

Apparently my thermostat stayed in the closed position yesterday and precipitated a radiator leak (read new radiator.)
I could not find info on replacing the thermostat. Is it really necessary to remove a lot of stuff up front to change it? I thought I read that it was different now, but maybe just extreme wishful thinking?
Looks to be about a grand for the radiator.
Car has 83k so maybe anyone out there with about 75k may wish to save some cash and install themselves a new thermostat
Thanks in advance!

Default On the ABZ engine, it's under everything, and you might as well do the full-up timing belt,

water pump, pulleys PM. Especially at that mileage. See Audipages.

Not sure with your engine, it might be easier to get at the thermostat on the 5-valve.

Default Re: Thermostat

Mine has just stuck almost closed too (no damage thank goodness, didn't let it get too hot)
Mine is '00 with the 5v engine. It MUST be easier on this engine as my dealer (UK) has quotred me £197 incl. labour and tax (17.5% here). It's going in on Tuesday, can't wait to be able to travel for more than 10 minutes, and without the heating on HI again. First real problem I've had in nearly two years and over 20,000 miles (she's done over 110,000 miles now).

What's the mileage on the car? Needs a TB job around 90K miles.

Default That's the water pump, the thermostat is directly above and slightly to the left......

of the pulley with the red stripe on it in this picture. However, this photo is of the 4 valve engine, not the 5 valve. I believe that the thermostat is in a different position on that engine. Anyone have a photo of the 5V engine front end?

Default That's a 4-valve engine. 2000 should have a 5-valve.

Airbil, what's your 3-letter engine code?

Default Correct...do the TB

On the 5v motor, to get to the thermostat, you basically have to do the TB job. It's a lot easier on the 5v as compared to the 4v motor though....the special tools are something like $200.
