Thermostat, timing belt and other issues...

Started having an overheating problem with my A8L. Rather than stay at the first large tick mark, the temp needle has been wandering up. Initially, it would go one tick above normal, then settle down, suggesting a slow thermostat. Now it's just running higher. Here's the wierd thing--if I turn on the climate control to HI, it goes right down to normal and then if I turn off the climate control altogether, it will stay normal. Why is that?
I still suspect I have to do a TB and Thermostat job. I thought I read about someone having the tools in the SF Bay Area. Is my memory correct, or am I thinking of another forum?
Thanks in advance. Bill

Putting the heat on HI helps because the extra heat is getting rejected into the cabin (the heater core bypasses the thermostat)
BTW the temp gauge on the dash is not accurate. you can get to the actual coolant temp by hitting a series of buttons on the climate control to get it into diagnostic mode. See the article "Unlocking the Secrets within the Climate Control Panel" in the tech section here.
