Thinking about buying a second hand A8

Thinking about buying a second hand A8
I currently own a 2000 A4 which I have owned since new. It has 63,000km and has the extended Audi assure warranty. I am starting to think I need something bigger, but I don't want to fork out any more cash to replace this car.
I have been looking at A8's from 1997 to 1999, and for the few I have seen for sale, there is one from each year within my price range. The difference is the mileage. I know that I want the 4.2 V8 quattro, but I am not sure of the differences in each car and experiences people have had. I would appreciate any education you can provide me.
Thanks,
Justin

No tip on 97s. 98s and 99s are almost identical.
I've had my 99 for almost a year now, I love it. If I still had to go to a lot of in-town parking garages, I don't think I would like that very much. That's about the only thing that would make me want a 4.2 A6 instead. An A8 is a fabulous highway cruiser, is great for going out with a 2nd couple, that sort of thing.
Go read up at Audipages in general, come back if you have more specific questions. Oh, and get xenons. I really miss the xenons I had/have in the Avant, and retrofit kits have dried up due to NHTSA pressure.

Re: Thinking about buying a second hand A8
I bought a '97 A8 with 162k miles. Original tranny. Now at 169k I'm dropping $3500 into rebuilding my tranny. Bummer! But, what I discovered is that these transmissions can go anywhere from high 40k to mine at 168k. It seems to be a flaw in the model of transmission. Be aware. My transmission model is a 5HP19AWD. FYI. Great cars, though. I would opt for a newer model with higher models over an older one with fewer miles. IMHO. Good Luck!
