Default Thinking of trading in our D3 A8L for the D2 S8, questions inside.

Can anyone compare the two trunks in their capacity? Archive shows that the D2 may have a larger trunk than the D3. Also, what reliability issues have you guys had? The D3 so far has been very good to me other than the occasional TPMS problem. The S8 engine in a tidier package and lighter weight is more and more appealing as I think about it.

Virtually identical luggage capacity, according to the model guide.

Default As far as reliability goes, my impression is that D2 S8 > D2 A8 > D3 A8.

I only put the D3 last because of its complexity.

Default You are porbably right.

The more electronics and gadgetry then more potential problems. Until the new S8 has a year or two to show problems and have improvements I'm a little reluctant to look into it.

Default Perhaps split the D2 A8 into pre and post facelift ?

My impression is that the reliability of the 2001-2003 A8 and S8 is comparable. Knock on wood, but there seems to be very few if any of the infamous tranny problems with the D2 A8 or S8 after 2000.

Yep, year for year looks to be about the same.

IMO D2 > D3 in terms of potential future problems. I will NEVER buy a used D3.

Why would the D2 S8 be > then the D2 A8?

Default Because on average, they are newer.

And some of the earlier problems seem to have been sorted out.

Default An epiphany: The S8's 28% lower gearing is easier on the tranny.

Stay with me on this ...

By definition: HP = torque x rpm / 5252

The load on the tranny is pretty much directly related to the motor's torque, and it takes about 40 hp to cruise at 70 mph. Take these two engines for example:

Engine A (with tall gearing) makes 40 hp at 2200 rpm. (95 lb ft of torque)

Engine B (with lower gearing) makes 40 hp at 4400 rpm. (47 lb ft of torque)

Even though an S8 has 50 more maximum hp, in 99% of normal driving, the S8's lower gearing requires higher revs from the motor, which puts less of a torque load on the transmission.

This all occurred to me while driving home this afternoon. What do you think?
