Default Timing Belt, can it be tightened

I posted yesterday about my issues, but didnt ask if the timing belt can be adjusted, to remove some slack?

Thanks

I got my 1990 100Q back on the road last night, this car with all its little problems over the years is still a wicked good car and the engine with 160k miles is still purring.

Default Remove some slack?

There is a tensioner that needs to be set....did you not set it to the proper dimension?

Why would you want to remove some slack?

Default Re: Remove some slack?

My mechanic was freaked out by how loose the belt was and said I shouldnt even drive the car. Now I dont know how loose the belt should be when the engine isnt running as that is how we saw it and I dont know if it tightens up when the engine is running. They suggested a $900 repair. I trust these guys but they admitted they didnt know much about the A8. If the belt is a little loose, is it dangerous to drive?

Thanks for your help Paul.

Paul,
I found the post below and it is exactly what I am seeing on my car. Did you determine this to be normal for the belt. If so, it would be fantastic news.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/107692.phtml</a

Default That's normal

When the engine is cold, it's that loose. When it heats up, it tightens up, but that's factory specs....so don't play with it.

Set it per the Bently and forget it!
