Tinted clearcoat?

Tinted clearcoat?
Does anybody know if the following colors -
Silver (has a blue effect)
Ming Blue (has a purple/amethyst effect)
Amethyst Grey (has a purple/amethyst effect)
Get their "effect" from the paint pigment or a tint in the clearcoat?
My idea is to get a silver '97 A8 on the cheap (for a six-speed project :-), strip the clearcoat, and get to an amethyst shade.
