stage 1 of my on-demand tip conversion is finished.
to summarise, i want to use my steering wheel tip buttons in an on-demand manner, like the later tip cars.
1) i have traced and confirmed that the wiring is as per the bentley.
2) i have connected supplementary wiring to the "tip up", "tip down", "tip recognition", and "tcm ground" wires.
the wiring diagram is below
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/53706/tiptronic_tip_switch.jpg">
the wires required to connect to are:
a) tcm ground, brown/yellow in tcm wiring harness
b) tip recognition, brown/red - position 6, yellow 10-pin connector
c) tip down, yellow/blue - position 7, yellow 10-pin connector
d) tip up, yellow/green - position 5, blue 10-pin connector
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/53706/tip_mod_plug_1.jpg">
the photo above shows the tapping of the feeds from the 2 10-pin connectors (the taps are blue)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/53706/tip_mod_plug_2.jpg">
this photo shows the 4-pin socket which i will use for the relay plate once i've sourced the relay.
3) findings:
- tip recognition is asserted all the time the gear lever is in the tip gate; it is not, as thought, a momentary switch
- tip up and down hold 12v until they are asserted
- with the tranny in "d", closing my "tip recognition" circuit (i.e. yellow 10-pin/6 to tcm ground) is sufficient for the steering wheel buttons to work
- using my simple "pin-outs" i can change gear using a momentary switch
- with the tranny not in "d", closing the "tip recognition" circuit has no effect
- leaving the "tip recognition" circuit closed and moving the gear lever from "d" will cause the tcm to log a code (tip recognition short to ground)
- in this case the tip will no longer work until the tranny is reset to park.
4) conclusions and next steps
- a simple relay to assert and hold tip recognition when the steering wheel tip buttons are hit will suffice for my purposes.
- i will need to work on the relay setup which is my next step
any suggestions or help is welcome.

If you use this wiring, you can activate tiptronic with either wheel buttons. If you press up button, it will switch to tiptronic and the car will be in a current gear that the D auto had. If you press the down button, it will switch to tiptronic and down shift at the same time.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/120058.phtml">https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/120058.phtml</a</li></ul>
