Top Speed of 98 A8 4.2???
Does anyone know what the "true" top speed of an A8 (US 1998 4.2) WITHOUT the governor?
Don't plan on finding out myself, but wondered if anyone has read info about it, or has found out on the track...

You'd need an awful long straight and the wind behind you!
270Kph (kliks)equates to almost 170 Mph.
I've had mine (A8 4.2 Sport 300hp)to 145mph and the acceleration had slowed right down, I reckon 155/160mph max. The S8 should reach another 5/10mph.

Top speed without restrictor is supposed to be 272 Km/h (169 mph), according to MTM. (They make a chip where the only change is that the limiter is gone.) This is real speed for a 300 Hp A8, meter should show about 300 km/h (186 mph).

I hit the limiter in my car once, meter showed 275 km/h (170 mph), real speed according to climate control display was 255 km/h (158 mph).
Acceleration at that speed was obviously not a lot, so to reach 186 mph on the meter would take some time and a *long* distance for sure!

I hit the limiter in my car once, meter showed 275 km/h (170 mph), real speed according to climate control display was 255 km/h (158 mph).

The climate control display of my '98 S8 Tiptronic stop itself at 249 km/h (?) when the meter showed about 260 - 262 km/h.
But the S8 don't stop itself.
With the limiter meter showed 273 - 275 km/h.
Without the limiter meter showed 285 - 290 km/h.

Did you go a very long distance when you reached 285-290? I think the A8 would need a very long distance to reach that speed!
When I hit the limiter I had another A8 on my tail, and a S8 behind him. Great fun, like the fast train from Ingolstadt coming through! :-)
It was on the german autobahn, and all three of us hit the limiter at the same speed, then doing 275 km/h on the meter steadily for a little while.
BTW, when I discovered the two other Audis in my mirror we where doing just over 200 km/h, and a friend of mine in a BMW 528 was cruising in front of me. So I called him and asked him to please move his slow assed bimmer out of the fast lane so the real cars could pass! ;-)
