Hi,

My transmission is fine if I use it it the ''3'' position, but if I use it in ''4'' or ''D'', when it reaches the 4th speed it seems to switch from neutral to gear (engages violently), but never stays in gear very long (few seconds max). When it reaches 4th gear, the instrument display PRND32 lights up also(limp mode).

I get the following fault codes:

17114 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio

17087 - Brake Switch (F): Electrical Malfunction

The gear oil hasn't been changed in at least 150 000km. Maybe I should replace oil + filter

Your clutch B is dead (4th-5th gear). You need a rebuilt trans.

Would an oil + filter change help ?

If not, will a 1997 A4 1.8t quattro transmission fit in my 1997 a8 4.2 quattro ? With mods ?

No, it won't help. The seal is blown. No, the 5HP19 won't work in the A8. It is not strong enough for it. You need the 5HP24A from an A8.
