Default tranny question.. do ZF transmissions in other car makers suck as well?

ZF produces these "fine" transmission for our A8s/audis... but why do they fail so soon... i mean u figure a car (A8) that cost $80+K would have a transmission built to last the life of the car!!!

now i know some of u guyz blame the "programming" of the transmission, but if the programming is set to leisure/grampa mode why would that kill the tranny faster than a sports mode programming??

do other car manufactures that use ZF transmissions suck as well????

Default Yes, they suck on other cars also

I might have more info on our car soon.

I am looking into a rebuilt valve body.....I'm almost certain that's it.

If you could replace it with a rebuilt unit for $600 or so, it wouldn't be so bad.

But yes, the reverse seal blows out, etc. which requires a rebuild.

Default The 3HP22 was pretty good

The two that I have heard of went more than 250,000 miles before needing rebuilding.

Just a note, running on higher octane seems to make the tranny shift better, especially better upshifting. I changed from 89 to 92/93 octane and I enjoy the car much more. I has lost a lot of it's doggish-ness. [Although I know the tranny is still a weak point.] Lesson learned regarding saving 10 cents a gallon.

Default Rebuilt Valve Body - what upgrades are available?

Are you going to get a rebuilt stock VB or are there updates and such available for early VB?

The ZF transmission on my (sold at 75,000 miles) 540 was rock solid, the one in my 745 looks also very strong, never heard of any transmission problems on any BMW.
