another view of the broken housing

I was told buy the shop doing my tranny that they see this common from JAG cars that use this ZF tranny and have a V8 motor. audi and JAG (more Jags though) come into the shop with this issue. He thinks it is because of the people beating on the tranny. I do not beat on my car at all. He was surprised to hear I did not. The rest of the tranny is fine and has no other damage. all gaskets, seals, filter, o rings on the selonids will be replaced. The value body is perfect no issues and the TC will be rebuilt and fresh fluid used. I asked him about the hunt issue and he says the computer is the issue. it is normal and says that on later models the computer was programmed diff to shift at diff points so when the pressue in the tranny was higher it shifted to a higher gear and when you let off the gas and the pressure dropped it would down shift to a lower gear. what happens to ours is the tranny shift like it should but when you let off the gas when in 5th gear the pressure dropps when you are driving around town (30-40mph) and the computer says too pressure too low shift back to fouth and it tries but as soon as it does th pressure builds and the computer says shift back to 5th (hunting) which causes the TC to lock unlock etc.. HE did not know of anything to fix the issue and does not know how to flash the computer to change shift points.. He did not think that the TC rebuild would help the hunting issue. it is a computer issue.. Thinking about that I wonder if changing the gear ratio in 5th and or 4th so it did not shift till later would help? OR change the gear ratio on the diff? just a thought since I know of noone who can or will flash the TCM.

When driving around town, ...
Why not put the tranny in 4?
Even with the lower gearing of the S8, I never use 5th unless I have more than about a 5 mile Interstate drive. I'll either select 4 or use Tip mode and never upshift to 5th. If it can, my tranny also annoyingly shifts into 5th early, the 30-40 mph you mention. In addition, not using 5th reduces the number of shifts by 25%, which I assume reduces tranny wear-and-tear.
Finally, 4th gear in the A8 is almost the same gearing as the S8's 5th. Except for long high speed cruising, I doubt that you'd miss that top gear.
