Default Transmission finally gave out at 222,940 miles.

I got a call from my wife yesterday saying that the car was making terrible noises so she parked it and waited until I arrived. When I arrived, I pulled it forward and then it made a banging sound which I knew was not good at all.

I hooked up my VAG-Com to it and it gave me the infamous Incorrect Gear Ratio code. I had it towed to my independent mechanic and he called me this morning and said he didn't think it made sense to rebuild a transmission with that many miles on it.

His recommendation was to look for a low mileage transmission out of a wrecking yard or buy a rebuilt transmission. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on where to get a good transmission?

Car is in excellent condition and my wife wants it fixed so she can make it to 400,000 miles. Wish I lived near Chicago.

Default I'll be flying to Cleveland in a few weeks

Too bad I can't bring a rebuilt one as a carry-on.

I bet Gabor has an extra that he can supply, you give him the core.

Bring it over. I will fix it the same day and you can drive it home next day.

Default Heh heh, alas but towing it to ya might just cost even more ... You are in IL right?

Local guys can't seem to see what is wrong by dropping the pan and valve body, so their thinking is if they gotta take it apart to see what is wrong, they might as well rebuild it while they are in there. Of course they are gonna charge a full day just to take the thing out, and another full day to put it back in after the rebuild ...

Default Two days is too much. Even the dealer could do it faster.

Yes, I am in IL.
