Transmission Fluid/Pan Change Advice
#11
A very good tip, and one that I had the AAMCO guys do when they changed my fluid/filter/gasket for 200.00 was cut the pick up tube by 1/2" short.
This removes the ability for a bumped pan to push up close to the pickup tube, and starve your pump.
The entire filter is down in the fluid, so you could just cut the entire pickup tube off, and likely never have a problem.
My pan was clean, steel not aluminum, and as noted, had magnets stuck to it. (With none of the worn out metal shavings I was expecting to find.)
Also the fluid was clean. I think it had been changed before.
Last note, I'm using the "house" fully synthetic ATF that AAMCO puts in all it's transmissions, and it's worked great so far. I asked some pretty tough questions, and they called the supplier, and told me it was a ester based synthetic, was selected by AAMCO because it does not burn easy, and they warrenty their rebuilds for life, so they never want to see them again, so I figured what the heck?
At 200.00 for the entire service, and they replaced my front, center and rear diff fluids with their house synthetic gear lube as well...
Cheaper than the Pentosin, and I did not have to do the wrench work or jack up the car. It did take 5 days however, since they had a tough time finding the right filter and gasket. (I'm in Boise, it's just left of the middle of nowhere...)
